Q. Joe,
How would you compare the Vexilar CLC 200 with the Portable Piranhas?
Thanks,
John P.
A. John-
30% smaller, easier to change batteries, and a better design for stuffing into packs. It folds shut and the power button is protected from accidentally being pushed as can happen fairly easily in the Piranhas. It'll run about 7 days on eight batteries. The batteries are field-loadable (if you need new ones) using a daredevle from one's tackle box. The Piranaha requires a phillips screw driver so you need to make sure you bring one in case you accidentally burn up the batteries on the portage because the Piranha button is easy to push. Image is defined in five colors in the Vexilar and I believe there are more pixels in the image for greater definition. Some guys build a bracket to hold the Vexilar on a thwart for better visibility. It does not have backlighting, so low light fishing is not real great. The back lighting in the Piranha is very good. But then, how much lighting does one need for summer fishing? The Piranha has temperature but it's of the surface water which is kind of worthless in my opinion. Piranhas have their tranducer cords wrapped up around the base which is nice. The Vexilar has the cable in a separate pile. No big deal, but you don't want to forget the cable anywhere.
The big gain on this unit in my opinion is the tiny size and better screen resolution. It's like having a very sophisticated calculator and doesn't take up a lot of room. People who own them, really do like them. Piranhas are nice units and meet a tighter budget.
Hope this helps.
Joe
