November 30, 2008 REVIEW by Joe
I just got off the ice (between 3" and 5 " depending where I went) and I got about 5 hours of test time on the new Humminbird ICE 55. My opinion about it in three words: IT WAS AWESOME! I really liked it a lot! Really bright display and I found the blue color (shows the weakest underwater signals) to be very helpful in determining what was swimming down there. The dual beam transducer factored in when I wanted to sharpen up what was directly below me and the zoom separated really tiny targets (itty bitty perch) coming up to look at my jig. The best part of this flasher is the LCD readout. Takes all the guess work out of using this unit. With the LCD, you know the depth the instant it hits the water. In my particular case, I was on mudflats and the depth (red) and the readout, coincide. BUT, the actual usable depth of the water was all that yellow color up above the red markings. Sure, a regular flasher by anybody else would show you this, but you'd need to interpret on your own without seeing the actual depth reading. That's not always clear to those of us who get befuddled by the flickering lights and circular graphs of regular flashers, present company included. This machine does a really nice job, very brightly! The ICE 45 will do the same job with less colors (no blue), and no target marker button (not a real huge deal) but for less money. The Humminbird ICE 35 has no LCD display and is back to the chart lines only like Vexilar and Marcum. However, for it's price you get a dual beam transducer and neither Marcum nor Vexilar gives you that in any of their units which will cost more than the ICE 35. You won't go wrong with any of these Humminbird flashers. They work well, are easy to read and very easy to see.
Joe's review after using it all last winter- 2008/09: Still awesome. I'm going to using it again this season. I used it in deep trout water of 80 feet, and a lot of 18-20 water depth for crappies and walleyes and I still can't see those internet "aficionados (experts)" who do all the bitching and whining about the Humminbird ICE units. They work very well. But get this, I had one guy griping that his H-bird was no good because he tore a knob off of it while transporting it. He didn't say much about its actual operation but hated it because he was able to smash it up fairly easily in his opinion - as if another brand of flasher would have fared better under his care. As a rule, I usually don't have this problem myself, but with a few warranty issues that H-bird resolved in 24-48 hours for our customers, I still stick to these being great flashers.
This is the NEW 2008 Humminbird ICE - 55 fish locater for Ice Fishing! These are SUCH hot new units that they are going to sell out in a very short time and give Vexilar a real run for it's money. Just read the spec's and compare them to Vexilar and Marcum'sice flashers. The really cool feature in this unit is that you get an LCD depth display that reads right in the middle of the screen. NO guessing, no multiplying or looking at circular charts to determine how deep you're fishing. It just shows you the depth number. That means that all the other blinky stuff going on is your jig that you see in real time. When you notice a new line appear under what you know to be your jig, that's a fish. If it's a really bright light, it's a bigger fish. With this Humminbird Ice - 55 you also get a dual beam transducer which is particularly useful when fishing in trout lakes with steep banks. A wide cone doesn't work too great in deep water applications so just flip a switch and go to a tighter 9 degree beam (cone) and problem solved. You can see your Chubby Darter again. Don't dink around too long - you'll spend another winter wishing you'd have bought one when you had the chance!
