Jigging Tip: Use light line (2-4 lb. test) for smaller fish. Ligther rods with more sensitive tips or even a spring bobber can help. The water is clearer in the winter and there's not a lot going on down there with turbulence normally caused by waves during non-ice season. If they see the line and they are finicky, they'll swim away.

NEW for this season! Lindy Flyers!

Just tie one of these beauties on and drop down with a either minnow, plastic body or a pork rind for excellent strike action! Use the smaller sizes for walleyes and rainbows and the bigger ones for northerns. lakers and eelpout. Try pork rind for northerns on the bigger sizes (1/4 and 3/8 oz.). I like these jigs because of their glide potential but also for there presentation of live bait. Lots of colors and some glow models. These are so new, they're not in our catalog yet, please call 1-800-280-1078 to order.

Catch more by jigging!

For Walleyes we recommend Fire Eye (banana) jigs with a small to medium sized minnow.  Use the 1/8 ounce with 4 to 6 lb. line and vary your jigging style from a small sporadic jerking up and down to a flutter or dance right on the bottom.  You can also drop this jig on the bottom and let it sit for those bottom feeding walleyes.  We stock the popular Super Glow versions of these jigs.  For rainbow trout smaller Fire Eye with a wax worm and drop it down on 4 lb. test line.  Do the same for pan fish in a weed bed.

Another good ice jig is the Forage Minnow in either the single hook or treble hook variety.  Drop down an 1/8 oz. treble with the head half or tail have of a small minnow and make it dance slightly at the bottom for walleyes  .  Jig it upward in a trout pond and watch them attack it on your lift-up.  Again use light line and set your drag fairly light as well.  Use shiny bright silver or gold holographics on bright days and Super Glow Holographics on darker days or in darker water.  Tip a 1/16 oz. treble with a wax worm and make it dance for finicky pan fish or trout.  Use 2-4 lb. line.  With the single hook Forage Minnow, hook on a whole, small minnow and drop it down for walleyes.

For maximum exposure and to draw attention, tie on an Airplane jig and hook on a minnow.  Lift up quickly and let it "fly"  down in a larger area pattern than standard vertical jigs or the fluttery doodads we've listed above.  They can cause quite a visual commotion down there so don't be surprised if an agitated suddenly northern pike nips off your jig!  All of the Fire Eye and Airplane jigs we stock are Super Glo types.  Hit 'em with a Tazer light or a Flash to make them stand out way down deep!
